Driving Instructor Training

There is certain legislation to becoming a Driving Instructor (ADI) and ethics that the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) administers.

The Register of Approved Driving Instructors is administered by the DSA, an Executive Agency of the Department of Transport, under the provisions of the Road Traffic Act 1988.

Firstly before training you need to:-

  • Have held a full licence for at least four years and have no more than 5 points overall.
  • Be a fit and proper person.
  • Be able to obtain two Referees when registering with the DSA
  • Read a number plate at 27.5 metres (unless wide then 26.5 metres).*

*If you normally wear glasses or contact lenses this must be worn.

For more information go to the DSA information on the Open.Gov.UK website or call Kingsley's for an informal chat about a new career as a driving instructor.

There are three parts to qualify as a Driving Instructor:-

Part I - Theory/Hazard Perception Test (computer based)

100 multiple choice theory questions, with an overall percentage rate of 85. However 80% of the marks in four sections will need to be achieved.
Hazard Perception test consists of 14 video clips each containing at least one developing hazard. One clip will contain 2 hazards, you have to identify 15 developing hazards. A Trainee has to score 57 out of a maximum of 75.

Part II - Practical Driving Test (ability to drive – 3 chances to qualify)

Approx 1 hour test.

Part III - Practical Driving Test (ability to instruct – 3 chances to qualify)

Upon qualifying part 1 and 2 examinations the trainee instructor needs to carry out 40 hours of driving instructor training in order to then apply for a trainee licence.

A Trainee has to pass each relevant Part before taking the next.
You have two years to qualify from the date a Trainee passes Part I.

A Trainee Licence would lapse if the 3rd attempt has not been passed with the 6 month period.

An extension to a Trainee Licence may be applied for but only granted by the DSA in the event of mitigating circumstances.

Kingsley's can sponsor your Trainee Licence on a full or part time basis. After you qualify we can offer you a place within Kingsley's to work as part of our team, working under a franchise scheme, for full or part time ADI's.

An ADI chooses their working hours for flexibility!

Please call for further information.
